The Boxing Club had five fighters that were invited to the U.S.A Team Trials in Las Vegas Nevada this weekend but due to injuries and prior commitments only three of the five were able to attend. The Boxing Club had the most invited fighters from any other club in Southern California which just shows how tough our jiu-jitsu program is. Ryan Gillespie who fought at 202.9 lost his first fight due to rear naked choke. During the fight Ryan dominated the standup game and with 1 minute left made a small mistake and his opponent was able to capitalize on it. Ryan then went on to dismantle his next 4 opponents winning all of his next fights by major decision. He made it to the 3rd place fight where he lost to a very tough grappler from Cobra Cai. Ryan Gillespie placed 4th at the very first ever U.S.A Grappling Team Trials.
Next up was Greg Breir who also fought at 202.9. He lost his first fight after getting a nice single leg takedown but his opponent switched it into a rear naked choke. His next fight as a tough battle but Greg also lost due to submission in the 3rd minute.
Cristina -Tina Coats fought on a very tough Sunday card. Her bracket included some of the very best female grapplers in her weight. Cristina is regarded by many as one of the top women grapplers in the United States. Cristina lost her first fight to professional MMA fighter Shaina Bozler by RNC. Cristina then went on to win two fights in a row to make it to the 3rd place fight. She met Shaina again and lost by twister submission. Cristina went on to place 4th at the first ever U.S.A grappling Team Trials.
All in all it was a very good performance by the Boxing Club fighters. They all fought hard and left everything they had on the mat. Placing two fighters shows that the Boxing Club is a force to be reckoned with!
